Introduction, orientation and Workshop: The Parable of the Labyrinth: Walking the Labyrinth as a Spiritual Practice with Lauren Artress

An evening introductory orientation and one day workshop for anyone interested in beginning or renewing their connection to the labyrinth.

"There must always be two kinds of art, escape art, for one needs escape as he or she needs food and deep sleep, and parable art, the art, which shall teach (humans) to unlearn hatred and learn love."  ~W.H. Auden

Spiritual practices are gaining in popularity during these chaotic times. The quiet the mind, open the heart and teach skills to navigate one’s interior world. Spiritual practices can be a ‘secular’ as knitting, or as sacred as icon painting. We will look at the broad array of practices and then focus specifically upon walking the labyrinth. The labyrinth is a three dimensional parable that teaches us, through our imaginations what we need to learn along the path of life.

You may have walked the labyrinth but never had a formal introduction to it, or, you may feel like a ‘failed’ meditator who could not quiet the mind during sitting meditation. All are welcome; please join me!

Workshop also serves as the pre-requisite for those going on to Facilitator Training.

Labyrinth Definition and Design
with Lars Howlett

Learn to draw and create tabletop labyrinths through a variety of simple artistic methods. Explore the differences between spirals and meanders, mazes and labyrinths to discover the essential elements for adapting designs or creating one of your own!

Taught in a classroom setting, students will receive a workbook highlighting the history, classification, and methods for drawing traditional or one-of-a-kind labyrinths. Students can apply new skills in the creation of finger labyrinths, artistic projects, or formal plans for a large-scale installation. This is a great opportunity to learn about a diversity of designs, explore how and why certain patterns resonate with people, and gain the confidence to explain and introduce the definition and history of these beloved symbols to others.

Labyrinth Materials and Making
with Lars Howlett

Do you dream of creating a temporary or permanent labyrinth for yourself or your community? In this two-day experiential workshop, Lars Howlett will demonstrate simple methods for making walkable Classical, Chartres, and Contemporary Labyrinths. Practice with tools and techniques for efficient and economic installations. See first-hand how intention, design, proportion, materials, site, and orientation benefit the labyrinth and those who walk it. We will create and walk at least four designs indoors and outside (weather-permitting) with no heavy-lifting or work on ‘hands and knees’ involved!

Inspiring stories and slideshows will explore the best options for a variety of settings and communities, from schools to festivals, churches to hospitals, backyards to public parks and more. Learn how to appropriately alter designs, paths, circuits, and the center to best suit various environments. See photos from Lars’ professional projects and pilgrimages to sacred sites around the world including Chartres, Iona, and Sweden. The cost and quality of dozens of different materials will be discussed, from tape to canvas, rubber mulch to grass, pavers to stone and more. Receive feedback on your own designs and projects and take the next step in realizing your labyrinth vision.Lunch and refreshments provided in each program.
