Do you dream of building a temporary or permanent labyrinth for yourself or your community? In this two-day experiential workshop, master builder Robert Ferre and journeyman Lars Howlett will lead you in the creation of walkable Classical, Chartres, and modified Contemporary Labyrinths. Techniques for efficient and accurate installation will be demonstrated including many tools invented by Robert. See first-hand how intention, design, proportions, materials, site, and alignment benefit the labyrinth and those who walk it.

Stories and slideshows will explore the best options for a variety of communities and settings, from schools to festivals, churches to hospitals, backyards to public parks and more. Learn how to appropriately alter proportions, paths, circuits, and the center to fit a variety of environments. See photos from Robert and Lars’ professional projects and pilgrimages to sacred sites around the world including Chartres, Iona, and Sweden. The cost and qualities of dozens of different materials will be discussed, from tape to canvas, rubber mulch to grass, pavers to stone and more. Receive feedback on your own designs and projects and take the next step in realizing your dream labyrinth!

This collaborative workshop by Robert and Lars is offered only once a year, on the beautiful grounds of the Veriditas headquarters at IONS with comfortable lodging and tasty, healthy food and an outdoor stone Chartres medieval labyrinth. A one-day design and drawing class proceeds this workshop exploring the definition, history, and variety of patterns around the world.

Robert Ferre

Robert Ferre worked for 17 years as a full-time labyrinth maker. He invented many of the tools and techniques currently used today. He has been involved in all aspects of labyrinths, including research, writing, editing, training, lecturing, and building. He has served as builder or consultant for major labyrinths in the United States and abroad.

Lars Howlett

Lars Howlett is a holistic and intuitive labyrinth builder who specializes in creating site-specific labyrinths using natural materials. He designs, builds and walks labyrinths as a practice in mindfulness, setting intention and connecting with the present moment. Past projects include a ‘literal labyrinth’ of used books for the SF Poetry Festival, a labyrinth of shoes on the theme of immigration, and a labyrinth of coconuts in Puerto Rico. He is the apprentice to master builder Robert Ferre and a Veriditas Certified Labyrinth Facilitator. Lars leads workshops and meditative walks in the SF Bay Area and beyond.
