FULL! New Paths and New Beginnings: A Labyrinth Workshop with Dr. Jan Sellers

  • 23 Jul 2022
  • 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM (BST)
  • YMCA North Staffordshire, Harding Road, Hanley, Stoke on Trent, ST1 3AE, England

This summer workshop, a time of warmth and renewal, is an opportunity to experience and discover the labyrinth – for some, a re-discovery. All are welcome but places are limited. We honour the memory of Bernard Moss as we bring his canvas labyrinth back into use for new paths and new beginnings. The workshop includes an introduction to the fascinating history and contemporary use of labyrinths around the world, in faith, community and educational settings. We’ll learn about labyrinth patterns, and together create a temporary labyrinth, indoors or outdoors (according to weather) giving us the opportunity to experience two labyrinth walks. This event is a Veriditas Qualifying Workshop, a stepping stone towards labyrinth facilitator training. We’ll reflect on our own next steps, locally or further afield, and hear from two people who’ve trained with Veriditas, as Bernard did himself. Suggested reading: Walking a Sacred Path by Lauren Artress.

In accordance with local plans, our time together will include practical skills for labyrinth stewardship: the care and use of a canvas labyrinth for labyrinth walks. Course participants are also warmly invited to a commemorative labyrinth walk in Bernard’s memory which will be held the following day. The workshop is free of charge; we welcome donations to an award for students, created in Bernard’s memory (details available on registration).

Biography

Dr Jan Sellers

Veriditas accredited presenter, Advanced Labyrinth Facilitator.

Awarded a UK National Teaching Fellowship in 2005, Jan’s NTF project explored joy and creativity in learning, seeking space for stillness and quietness in campus life. Jan first encountered the labyrinth in this context in 2007, learning from Di William’s work at the University of Edinburgh. At the time, Jan was working at the University of Kent in Canterbury, where the idea took hold with the creation of the beautiful Canterbury Labyrinth on campus in 2008. Jan trained with Veriditas in Chartres, France, in 2008 and again in 2013. She loves facilitating labyrinth workshops and introducing people to the quiet and profound experience of labyrinth walking.

Jan is now a freelance researcher and writer, currently serving on the Veriditas Higher Education Group; the Labyrinth Society’s Research Committee and the Labyrinths in Britain Steering Group. She co-edited Working with the Labyrinth (Sewell, Sellers & Williams: Wild Goose, 2012) and, with Bernard Moss, Learning with the Labyrinth (Bloomsbury, 2016).

Jan’s latest research, available free online, is a detailed index of permanent and landscaped labyrinths at universities and colleges around the world (Sellers, 2021, www.jansellers.com/publications).
